XBox One Sells $2 Million, Still Beaten By Sony PS4

Xbox One console

On December 11, 2013, XBox One sales reached 2 million in the first 18 days. They have averaged 111,111 consoles sales per day.

XBox Corporate Vice President, Yusuf Mehdi says, "We continue to be humbled and overwhelmed by the positive response from our fans...We are thrilled to see sales of Xbox One on a record-setting pace, with over 2 million Xbox One consoles in homes around the world."

Director of Video Games on Amazon, John Love, shared that "during peak demand, customers were ordering the Xbox One console at over 1,000 units per minute on Amazon.com."

Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Gamestop, Bob Puzon, calls the Xbox One "one of the hottest selling products this holiday season."

Both Xbox One and PS4 Are Selling Fast

Both Microsoft and Sony sold one million units within 24 hours on sale with the Xbox One and PS4 in 2013.

As of December 3, 2013, Sony had sold 2.1 million PS4 consoles worldwide. Sony Computer Entertainment president and CEO Andrew House said the "PS4 delivered the best launch in the Playstation history."

Xbox One and PS4 Console Price Points

CNET's Nick Statt says that Microsoft will have trouble outpacing Sony's PS4 after Christmas 2013. Many analysts are in agreement that Sony PS4 has a competitive edge with a price of $399, which is $100 less than Xbox One at a price of $499. However, some speculate that Xbox One could match the PS4 sales if the Xbox One's price dropped to $399. That would be tough for Xbox to do, considering that it costs about $471 to manufacture the Xbox One console, according to this CNET article. It also points out that the PS4 manufactures for about $381. Both consoles have very slim profit margins.

Will Video Games Give Edge to Sony PS4 or Microsoft Xbox One?

Microsoft must consider that many of its 2014 game releases are multi-platform, and not exclusive to the Xbox One. The Sony PS4 could continue to pull ahead during early 2014.

The Microsoft Xbox One exclusive game Titanfall is to be released in March 2014. The Sony PS4 exclusive release around the same time is Infamous: Second Son.
