You may be wondering why Febreze aerosol spray cans say: "Do not shake" on the back of the can. It's a great question.

Why Does the Febreze Aerosol spray can say "Do Not Shake" - The Answer

If you shake a Febreze aerosol spray can, the action of shaking and then spraying could result in a propelled liquid that could become a skin or eye irritant rather than a mist that disperses into the air.

Febreze specifically uses compressed nitrogen in its aerosol cans as a propellant.

In general, if you vigorously shake an aerosol spray can before dispersing it, it traps air bubbles within the liquid formula, and these air bubbles can cause the atomizer to work less effectively. This could cause unintentional dripping or splattering when activating the atomizer release (the spray trigger).

The Science Behind the Shake

Inside of most aerosol cans is a liquid, and above that liquid is a volume of high-pressure gas - known as the propellant. If you shake the can, you force the liquid into tiny droplets. These droplets create a larger surface area for the liquid and do not disperse properly. The atomizer will then not disperse the liquid formula as intended if the liquid is in tiny droplet form.

Why Does the Febreze Aerosol spray can say "Do Not Shake"

The manufacturer behind Febreze, which is Proctor & Gamble, wants consumers to experience their products as intended in a safe manner, without any unintended accidents. They have good reasons to state on the back of the can: "Do Not Shake, for best results."
