Joffrey Baratheon Killed in Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 2 The Lion and the Rose

The Death of Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones

What happened in Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 2 ("The Lion and the Rose")?

This episode originally aired on HBO, and was written by George R. R. Martin from the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. This wedding event in the Game of Thrones novels is referred to as the "Purple Wedding"

The Following Information has SPOILER details from the television series Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 2

How did Joffrey Baratheon die?

Joffrey Baratheon was poisoned by Petyr Baelish (also known as "Littlefinger" and Olenna Tyrell at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, however Tyrion Lannister is blamed and arrested for his murder, and Sansa Stark is accused of being his accomplice. This wedding event in the Game of Thrones novels is referred to as the Purple Wedding. (Also see my previous blog post: "The Red Wedding") The death of the principal villain "Joffrey" all happened only a few episodes after the Red Wedding.

Sadly, or not-so-sadly, Joffrey was killed within hours of his wedding.

Episode 2 (The Lion and the Rose) is a "satisfying" episode, because the Game of Thrones character Joffrey Baratheon rules as an out of control dictator and dies, and arguably so because he deserved it due to his abuse of power on the throne. His character clearly was not fit to rule a Kingdom, but he was given this incredible position of power so early on in his life. Given the fast pace of the Game of Thrones series, his death happened quickly in the HBO series.

Joffrey Baratheon died in Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 2

The Events Leading up to the Death of Joffrey Baratheon in Season 4, Episode 2

Ramsay is hunting a woman with the help of Theon Greyjoy, whom Ramsay has tortured and brainwashed into being his servant "Reek" after castrating him. Ramsay tells Theon about Robb Stark's death as Theon is shaving him.

Back at the King's Landing, Tyrion Lannister convinces Jaime to train on the sword with his left hand (since his right hand - his sword hand - was chopped off).

The Purple Wedding of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell

Joffrey and Margaery are married at the Sept of Baelor to unite the houses Baratheon and Tyrell and the wedding party returns to the Red Keep for the wedding feast. Cersei confronts and accuses the woman knight Brienne of being in love with her brother, Jaime. For entertainment, Joffrey is amused by a play involving dwarves at his wedding, that re-enacts the War of the Five Kings, and urges Tyrion Lannister to join the play, trying to humiliate him. But Tyrion has a witty response that insults Joffrey. So Joffrey makes Tyrion his cupbearer. The new bride of Joffrey, Margaery, tries to calm everyone down, but at this moment, Joffrey starts choking after drinking from the chalice. Joffrey accuses Tyrion, his newly appointed cupbearer of poisoning him. Cersei orders that Tyrion is arrested for poisoning the King. This leads to Tyrion's decision to leave King's Landing.
