Details on New Star Trek Discovery Television series on CBS in 2017

Star Trek: Discovery

New details released on the Star Trek TV show, called Star Trek: Discovery on CBS in 2017. Information about the show reveals that the lead character will be a woman that is a lieutenant commander, before the Original Star Trek series takes place, featuring Captain Kirk and Spock.

This EW article points out that this isn't the first time that Star Trek has has a leading lady on the show. Star Trek Voyager, airing from 1995 to 2001 had a female captain -- Kathryn Janeway.

The writer-producer Bryan Fuller talks about the role of this female lieutenant will be diverse, and very likely African American. He says that he spoke to the first black woman in space, Mae Jemison, to gain inspiration for casting this lead character in the new Star Trek: Discovery television series on CBS in 2017.

The COO of CBS expects Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 to get at least 15 million viewers for the television premiere event.

Star Trek Discovery Television Series to be Diverse in Many Ways

What will make this character interesting is that she is not the Captain, so she will have a different perspective than previous Star Trek television series.

In addition to this, Fuller has made it very clear that "absolutely we're having a gay character," noting that Bryan Fuller himself is openly gay. There will also be robots.

Whoopi Goldberg has gone on record to say that she would love to bring her Star Trek: The Next Generation character, Guinan, to the new Star Trek: Discovery television series.

Fun Fact: The new Star Trek television series will take place approximately 10 years before Captain Kirk's notable five-year mission.

Editor's note: One of my personal favorite Star Trek series was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, featuring Captain Benjamin Sisco. I really enjoyed watching this series. Share in the comments section your favorite Star Trek series and why.

The Best and Worst New Television Show of 2014, The Flash (CW) and Stalker (CBS)

The Flash on the CW is the best new show of 2014
The Flash on The CW is the best new show of 2014

The Flash on the CW is the Best New TV Show of 2014

The best new TV show of 2014 is The Flash on the CW.  Actor Grant Gustin plays Barry Allen, a super smart 20 something who is a CSI detective on the police force.  He is zapped into a coma the night that the particle accelerator exploded, sending a massive shockwave through Central City.  As a result, rather ordinary people gained superpowers, depending on their circumstances when they were hit by the shockwave.  In the show, these people with superhuman powers are called "meta humans." Barry Allen is just learning how to control his powers, and faces new challenges when meta humans go rogue, using their superpowers for evil.  Throughout the first season, Barry Allen must face the fact that his secret love - Iris West - must never know that he is the Flash, because it could put her life in danger.

The Flash is a spectacular show on the CW, and is a perfect fit with The Arrow already in its weekday lineup. This is why Z. Love's Entertainment Blog has picked The Flash as the best new television show of 2014.

Watch the trailer below:

Stalker on CBS is the Worst New Television Show of 2014

The worst new TV show of 2014 was Stalker on CBS.  Many different television critics voted Stalker as the worst new TV show of 2014, on CBS.

Some critics say that it is simply isn't cool to glorify stalking women in a television show.  It is just plain creepy.

This show stars Dylan McDermott as the lead detective, along with Maggie Q.  But, critics say the script is "bland and boring," or just "uninteresting." They have gone as far as saying Stalker is just a "trashy" version of CSI, and that it was just a plain failure for CBS.

They were trying to compete with Fox's cult show, The Following, but Stalker never gained solid ground.  That is why it is the worst new television show of 2014.

Michonne Character Spotlight from the Walking Dead Television Show on AMC

Michonne killing zombies with her sword
Michonne taking on a group of zombies with her sword

Michonne is one character in the hit AMC television show, The Walking Dead, that I wouldn't want to mess with. She is played by actress Danai Gurira.

Michonne's weapon of  choice is the Katana sword.  She would rather slice zombies with her sword, than worry about shooting and reloading. Although, Michonne has carried a gun in the television show. In Season 5, episode 2, Michonne comes across a zombie, and beats it in the head with the butt of her automatic rifle, because she is without her favorite Katana sword. Find out if she gets it back (below).

Michonne's First Appearance in The Walking Dead Television Show on AMC

Michonne makes her first appearing in AMC The Walking Dead television show at the end of Season 2. She shows up mysteriously in the woods as a hooded figure with a Katana, and decapitates a zombie that is attacking Andrea. It shows her with two zombies shackled behind her. They have no arms, and no jaws, because they were cut off, for obvious reasons. In this Season 2 episode, "Beside the Dying Fire," it is revealed that this is the character Michonne from the graphic novel.

There are different variations of this next question regarding Michonne's mules:
Who are the two zombies in chains behind Michonne?
Who are the two walkers Michonne has in chains?
Who are the two walkers in chains?

Where Michonne's Two Chained Walkers and Katana Sword Come From

Later in the series, Michonne has a flashback, which reveals that one of the walkers was her boyfriend, Mike, and the other is his best friend Terry. Mike was bitten by a walker trying to break into the house. Michonne bandages him up, but this is before she understands that he will turn into a zombie. Michonne searches a neighbor's house for medical supplies. In her search, she finds a Katana sword. When she returns home, both Mike and Terry have become zombies.

Michonne is angry with Mike and Terry for getting high, which ultimately led to them being bit by walkers, and resulting in the death of her young son, Andre. She keeps them alive because they were her "last link" to her past life, before the zombie apocalypse.

In Season 3, Mike and Terry start to make too much noise while she has taken cover, so she kills decapitates them. Otherwise, the Governor, and his band of men would have found her spying on them. The benefit of keeping zombies Mike and Terry around, was because walkers don't eat walkers, and they helped keep Michonne somewhat camoflauged from zombies lurking nearby.

Michonne Loses Her Sword Temporarily at the end of Season 4

At the end of Season 4 in the Walking Dead finale, Michonne's Katana sword is confiscated by the Termites. However, the surviving Termites become The Hunters, and kidnap Bob and eat his leg. They plan on harming Rick's group at the church and eating them too, so they come up with a plan to stop them. At the end of Season 5, episode 3, the Hunters are stopped, and Michonne gets her Katana sword back. She is pretty happy to see it in one of the enemy's packs.

Conclusion: Michonne is a pretty tough character on this hit television show on AMC. Zombies don't stand a chance.

Polygamous Marriage Decriminalized as TLC Television Documents Reality Shows in Utah

When you think of polygamous marriage, many people often first think of Mormons living in small rural towns in Utah. That is because in some of these communities, polygamous marriage is accepted and is a normal way of life.

Do you believe that polygamy is morally okay?

Polygamous Marriage Documented in TLC Television Shows 'Sister Wives' & 'My Five Wives'

Sister Wives on TLC
Brown Family of the TLC show 'Sister Wives'

The TLC show, Sister Wives, is a prime example of a polygamous marriage in the state of Utah. Sister Wives is a show that openly documents a polygamous marriage between one man - Kody Brown - and his four wives. But the Brown family had to flee Utah because polygamous marriage is against the law in Utah, because of the state's polygamy law.

U.S. District Court Judge Rules Utah Polygamy Law is Unconstitutional

Families that practice polygamy, as seen on the show, Sister Wives, are no longer allowed to be prosecuted as criminals in Utah. This comes as a relief to the Brown family resulting from U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups ruling that Utah's polygamy law is unconstitutional. U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups said that Utah's polygamy law is a violation of the First Amendment.

The Brown family filed their lawsuit in July 2011 against Utah's polygamy law, but didn't leave Utah until 2012. Utah's polygamy law is stricter than in the other 49 U.S. states.

Below are three comments from users regarding the U.S. District Court ruling on Utah's polygamy law:

'My Five Wives' on TLC

TLC also runs a show called 'My Five Wives' about another polygamous marriage originating from northern Utah. My Five Wives is about head of household, Brady Williams, and his five wives. In My Five Wives, the show attempts to accurately demonstrate that there should be equality for all, and that the Williams family loves God, and that a polygamous marriage can show that. On the TLC show website, it says that the Williams family wants "to emphasize that their choice to be together is more about mutual love and committment than it is about religion."

What do you think? Is it really showing love by marrying multiple wives, or is it really being selfish?

We know what God thinks. In the Bible, those that had multiple wives were sinning against God, including King David and King Solomon.

SyFy Channel Presents a Dud with Defiance

SyFy's Defiance
Defiance on SyFy

I wanted Defiance to be a winner. I really did. But for me, it flopped, for many reasons.

Defiance is SyFy channel's latest "original" television series. It is set in the future of Earth, after it was attacked by an alien race. There was a war. The result was a co-mingling of humans and aliens in an Earth city called Defiance, which is literally built on top of the former city of St. Louis, Missouri. You can even see the famous Arch. Thank you for salvaging the famous arch on a futuristic television series on SyFy.

Indogenes are like the Borg?

The Indogene aliens in Defiance are usually seen as servants to families, and an aid to the mayor, and the town doctor. The SyFy show page says that Indogenes are a partly cybernetic race, but there is no hint to this in the early episodes or obvious cybernetic external hardware on the characters.

If they are supposed to be like the borg, you could've fooled me.

The Doctor (Doc Yewll) on Defiance resembles a character from Farscape, named Zhaan. She was played by Virginia Hey, and she was a Delvian priest. Because of her extensive knowledge on herbal medicines, she was the doctor and healer aboard the living spaceship, Moya.

The makeup artists may argue that she has scales, but we really don't see her up close enough to see the small intricacies of her makeup. She just looks like a pale, alien with a bloated face. Her character is obnoxious, and has very bad attempts to be sarcastically funny. It is not funny. She is too similar to Zhaan on Farscape, except that Zhaan actually had purple in her makeup, which made the race more believable.

Lack of Moral Integrity
My biggest qualm with the show is that it lacks moral integrity. It is clearly not a family friendly show, and I actually find it offensive in different parts. The town has a public brothel, and happens to be ran by the sister of the mayor. She services the main character, Nolan, in the very first episode. This open and legal prostitution is supposedly accepted behavior in the future.  Episode 3 opens up with a sex scene in which Kenya pours grease on a man in a sexual way. I think it is just plain trashy.

Next is the Tarr Family. They are from the alien race, called the Castithans. Their custom is that they all bathe together. There are several scenes in each episode in their bath house or steam room. The matriarch, Stahma Tarr is only covered by very little in strategic places in these scenes. They even act offended in Episode three that Christie McCawley doesn't want to bath openly with their son, Alak Tarr. There is too much raunchiness on this show, and that is one of the main reasons I don't care for it.

The Makeup Could be Better

Out of all of the alien makeups, I would say that Irisa's is the best by far. I don't care for the other alien races presented because none of them seem original. The Bio-Human is probably the most original thing on the show.

Alak Tarr
Some of the Alien makeups in Defiance that are just shoddy. Alak Tarr's makeup, for example, is obviously not that great, because his tan skin shows through (see picture - he looks silvery, but is supposed to be pale white).

Just hire some of the fine folks that win on the SyFy show, Face-Off.

The Acting is Sub-par

For me, the acting is sub-par. I would say the best actor on the show is Nolan, played by Grant Bowler, and second best is Irisa, played by Stephanie Leonidas. If you see what Stephanie looks like before make-up, you would be surprised by the huge difference when she comes out.

The rest of the acting is pretty bad. What really bugs me is that several characters act as if their culture has Native American roots. The McCawley family is an integral part of the show. Graham Greene plays Rafe McCawley, the father of Christie McCawley (Nicole Munoz). He has much influence over the town because he owns the mines. His family gives off a Native American vibe, and that sort of works.

However, the Irathient aliens also have a strong spiritual heritage, and have the body painting going on, especially Irisa. It just doesn't work for me. The aliens are not alien enough, when we already have a family representing that Native American essence.

Some characters are simply not believable.

The ex-Mayor who wants to sell out the town to make a buck - not believable. The ex-Mayor's right hand man is also not convincing that he is a bad-guy. Amanda Rosewater is the new mayor, played by Julie Benz, and she just doesn't seem like a political type.

The McCawley Family as a whole just doesn't compell me. Their acting bores me. Defiance should have cast better overall, but especially for Christie McCawley and Alak Tarr. The Romeo and Juliet love story is really what pushes this show, because the whole plot revolved around them. Their characters are so boring that you forget they are even there!

Deputy Tommy LaSalle is not bad, but shouldn't there be more deputies? Where are the other law dogs?

Alien Rituals Are Disturbing

In Episode two, the Castithans wanted to pull one of their own apart, limb by limb, because he was too afraid to fight. Honestly, this was not a great episode. It was quite boring.

Irisa embracing her Irathient heritage
Who cares about this alien that we don't even know?

I surely don't.

In Episode three, the Irathient Spirit Riders leader wants to unlock Irisa's "psychic" abilities using a ritual where he has to cut himself. This is just disturbing, and is not needed.

Psychic abilities and cutting is not needed to make this a good show.

Good writers are needed to salvage this wreck.

The viewers do not want to see the Tarr family in their bath tub every other scene. Stop showing us the same sex scenes over and over.

Not only do viewers not care about these boring and disturbing rituals, but it does not add to the show.

If you don't believe me, just watch Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis. They know how to make compelling alien races without showing us the mundane stuff that we don't care about.

Defiance is Not So Original

There is one alien race that was created as Defiance's version of a Wookie. This was sort of intentional. But then the Tarr family is Castithan, and they are remarkably reminiscent of the vampire alien race in Stargate: Atlantis called the Wraith. And then there are the Irathients. They have large eyebrow ridges, bigger eyes, and puffy faces. They are remarkably close to vampires (when they are in vamp form) in the show Angel (1999 - 2004). In fact, the Bio-Human has even been done. It's called Terminator.

What's original about this show? It's a mash-up of other shows from the past.

Then, you have the eerily similar feel to the past FOX show, Terra Nova (2011). Yes, Terra Nova was in the past, but they built their compound with high-tech gagdetry, and was in the middle of nowhere. Sounds just like Defiance, only Defiance is not family friendly, and Terra Nova was. Terra Nova's filming was much richer in colors. Defiance seems to be filmed in gray, and the gloominess is overwhelming.

Then you have Firefly, which was like a "space cowboys." The town of Defiance has a wild west grit to it, filled with lackluster alien races and a brothel for the miners. Firefly even had their own companion aboard the ship, but in Firefly, there wasn't an over-gratuitous helping of sex every episode. It was much more subtle and only hinted at in conversations.

Commentary on Defiance

I do want to say that I think it was a pretty good move to launch a video game and a show at the same time. That way, if the video game is good, the show can compliment it. But, if the show is no good, well, the video game better be pretty good to make up for it.

I think SyFy Executives probably got pretty excited about the Defiance television series because they were coming across a lot of losers, but the show honestly feels like it has no soul. It takes talent to act, to write, and to sell a show. I think SyFy has the marketing part of it down, but they seriously needed better actors and actresses (it doesn't necessarily have to be stars we've heard of), and they need some better writers.
It is an ambitious undertaking with such a large set built, but there are no great actors on this show. I just don't see the chemistry there, and it has lost me as a viewer for the other reasons mentioned.

My observation is that Defiance does not have longevity because the writers think that you have to shove sex in our faces, rather than be subtle. It makes the show trashy. Sex does not make a good show. The Tarr family sex scenes do not keep the story moving along. They actually slow it down.

The disturbing rituals that involve cutting to unlock psychic powers was the final straw. I am not going to watch a show that incorporates serious issues that real people face -- and struggle with.

Judge Joe Brown Television Show Cancelled in 2013

Judge Joe Brown

According to TheRoot.com, Judge Joe Brown has been cancelled from television. CBS has axed his show due to a 17% ratings drop. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Judge Joe Brown was making $20 million a year. CBS Television Distribution wanted Judge Joe Brown to take a salary cut due to his ratings drop, but he wouldn’t, and his show has been cancelled. It has been a good 15 seasons, and it is time for Judge Joe Brown to say farewell to judging cases on the air with CBS.

Judge Joe Brown is a former Criminal Court judge from Shelby County, Tennessee, but was born and raised in South Central, L.A. He got his degree from UCLA.

Wikipedia says, “Joe Brown is the first black male to preside over a courtroom television show and the first black person to preside over a “long-running” courtroom seres…” Obviously, this statement was before the breaking news that Judge Joe Brown's courtroom TV series has been cancelled.

Other television distributors could pick up where CBS left off, but chances are they won’t pay $20 million a year.

Judge Joe Brown was originally discovered by the producers of Judge Judy. His set is located next to the set of Judge Judy’s in Sunset Bronson Studios in California, and both are produced by Big Ticket Television and syndicated by CBS Television Distribution.

Judge Judy - which airs on the CW – apparently made $45 million a year (as of 2012). That’s more than any other personality on TV. David Letterman makes $28 million (as of 2012) and Jay Leno made $25 million (as of 2012). For scripted drama, Mark Harmon from NCIS is the highest paid television star making $11 million for a full season.

These salaries were shared in TV Guide’s “Who Earns What” survey.

Announcement: Samsung's New TV to Compete with Apple in 2013

Samsung's new portrait transparent TV (not yet released)

Samsung is attempting to pre-empt Apple by releasing a portrait-style TV that boasts a transparent background.

Our world continues to move the way of Ray Bradbury’s book, “Fahrenheit 451,” where TV’s become such an important part of the lifestyle, that they take up entire walls (and people cannot unglue themselves from it long enough to do anything).

Samsung posted the above picture on their blog, Samsung Tomorrow. People are speculating what the picture is actually insinuating. I’ll leave it up to you to decide for yourself.

Will Samsung become the next Apple in terms of high-tech electronics?

Some could say that Samsung is already doing a good job competing.

You may already know that Samsung Galaxy III smartphones outsold the iPhone in Q3 sales in 2012.

Samsung is trying to make waves before Apple releases the Apple TV that is supposed to shake up the television industry. According to the Mac Observer, Tim Cook went on record about seriously moving Apple into the television market.

If Apple does release TV’s in 2013, they will have to go head-to-head with Samsung in a battle of technology between two electronic giants.

You may already know that Samsung Galaxy III smartphones outsold the iPhone in Q3 sales in 2012.
Are you ready to upgrade to a portrait–shaped transparent TV?

The world has not yet fully embraced the 3D TV yet. What makes Samsung think that their new TV will be successful?

There are too many questions, and Samsung has yet to make an official announcement (in words) what their latest TV will do, and why it is far superior to an Apple TV.

It sounds like Mac vs. PC all over again, but this time in the TV market. 2013 is going to be a big year.

Angus T. Jones Calls 'Two and a Half Men' "Filth" in Interview

Angus T. Jones laughing in Forerunner interview on Warner Bros. lot

Angus T. Jones, star of the CBS show, ‘Two and a Half Men,’ did an interview from his trailer on the Warner Bros. lot, revealing some shocking news about his feelings on his current role on the sitcom.

Angus T. Jones says in the interview: “Please don’t watch Two and a Half Men…I’m on ‘Two and a Half Men’ and I don’t want to be on it. Please stop watching it. Please stop filling your head with filth.” Angus T. Jones also says, “You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that.”

Angus T. Jones shares in the interview that he visited many churches before trying out a Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) on a Saturday. He felt this was a natural fit for him, and that the particular sermon preached that day was tailor-made just for him, as he says in the interview.

Chuck Lorre has not yet publicly commented on Angus T. Jones recent interview, but he has no doubt heard the news of the Angus T. Jones interview.

Chuck Lorre had a public feud with Charlie Sheen in 2011, after Charlie Sheen was kicked off of the show, and Sheen went on record to publicly disparage Chuck Lorre, the show’s producer. Chuck Lorre fired back with his own version of the events leading up to Charlie Sheen's exit. Charlie Sheen then followed his departure with his own 'Torpedo of Truth' tour, going onstage in major U.S. cities, telling his own side of the story.

An earlier blog post on Charlie Sheen can be read here on Z.Love's Entertainment Blog.

Angus T. Jones recent comments come after getting saved in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was being interviewed by the Forerunner Chronicle, which is associated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The real question is: Will Angus T. Jones continue acting on the show, ‘Two and a Half Men,’ for the remainder of the season or will they kick him out like they did Charlie Sheen?

Angus T. Jones makes $350,000.00 per episode, more than one person’s typical annual salary.

Since the Angus T. Jones interview, Charlie Sheen has offered Angus T. Jones a role on his show, "Anger Management."

The Youtube video featuring Angus T. Jones can be seen here.

Angus T. Jones has also issued a public apology as well, saying: "Without qualification, I am grateful to and have the highest regard and respect for all of the wonderful people on 'Two and a Half Men' with whom I have worked over the past ten years and who have become an extension of my family."

Group Dating: Not Meant for Bachelors

One Bachelor cannot outrun 1,000 Brides
What's up with the Bachelor? When you have 1,000 women chasing you, its hard to pick the right one. But I am not talking about the Chris O' Donnell (above) running from 1,000 brides, but the guy that is on TV, dating a whole group of them at once. See the guy below holding the rose.

Bachelor Brad Womack
Now I would not admit watching this television show, but I will say that I was listening in on the last episode as my wife watched the proposal. This show is not reality. Even though it is reality...tv.

Trying to pick one over another is hard, for a Bachelor.
I think it is wrong to have a large group of women to emotionally invest themselves into one man, and from the reverse, it is wrong for one man to invest himself in so many women, even if the ultimate goal is to be with only one. I personally believe that such a scenario can set a man up to cheat once he is back down to one. Cue the Brian McKnight song, "Back at One".

Now the "After the Final Rose" show is on, and the one woman that Brad left at the proposition is devastated because she really thought she was the one. That's reality television for you. And we find out that Brad and Emily (the one he chose to be with) have broken up. Does that really surprise you? But he claims that the rollercoaster of the relationship is still strong and will work. Emily says they have to work on how to deal with conflict resolution. Most couples don't know how to "follow the rules" during a fight. I was fortunate enough to go through many marriage classes and pre-marriage counseling.

So why is it that we desire to watch situations where a person is set up to fail? Sure, some bachelors and bachelorettes on the show have made it, but should we really find our "soul mate" by dating a whole group of women at once?
