Palworld Servers Cost Over $475 Million to Run for February 2024. Just Don't Call it a Pokémon Game

PC Gamer reported that Palworld server costs were almost $500K in February 2024 as the massively popular game merges elements that are similar to Fortnite, Monster Hunter, and Pokémon and has sold around 12 million copies on Steam.

Palworld is Wildly Popular and Expensive to Maintain Servers

PC Gamer reported that Palworld has 19 million players, and sold about 12 million copies of the game on Steam at $30 each. According to the math, they have brought in at least $360 million in revenue so far.

PC Gamer also reported that Network engineer Chujo Hiroto was instructed to "never let the server go down" on the game.

He said:

"Following the order to never let the service go down no matter what, we have prepared servers without regard to cost. We will continue to give our all to ensure that all players can enjoy to the fullest! $478,000..." -Chujo Hiroto

He should have followed that up with an "Aye, aye, captain."

PC Gamer pointed out that Palworld will not be selling 12 million games a month, so the money coming in may not be able to continually sustain the high costs of maintaining the Palworld servers. There are also currently no microtransactions in Palworld. That may change down the road when examining how the game will bring in more money to offset the costs.

That may be a problem for another day. For now, let's just enjoy the game while we have it. To host more than four players in one world, it requires a Palworld dedicated server that could host up to 32 players in one single world.

Japanese Entertainment Agencies: Don't Compare Palworld to Pokémon

Dexerto reported that Japanese entertainment agencies are "advising their clients not to mention Pokémon on social media when speaking about the Palworld video game." (Source: Tokyo Sports)

Dexerto also noted that Palworld has "broken the third-party launch record on Xbox game pass." 

Not too shabby.

They report that the game is now at 20 million players a day.

Meanwhile, Pokémon might be getting a little jealous. They said on January 25, 2024 that they are "investigating any unauthorized usage of their Intellectual Property in Palworld."

Each squad of weapon carrying fighters has a Captain, who has the power to call in air-strikes and radio down medical supplies or an item called "Less Harma Pharma" which reduces the damage taken by a soldier.

This game is perfect for the video gamer that likes strategy, and has both campaign modes and an online multiplayer mode.

Each soldier has a unique special ability that can be performed, which makes this strategy game interesting.

RAD Soldiers for iPhone

RAD Soldiers for iPhone is obviously on a smaller scale. The loading time on an iPhone 4 takes a few minutes, and if you are toggling between online multiplayer matches, the loading time can become annoying.

The other annoying thing about RAD Soldiers on iPhone is that it is easy to mispoke the screen, or for your finger poke to not register and then the move is not accepted. After having this happen a lot, it can get frustrating.

If you don't mind the load time and the mis-pokes, then play RAD on your iPhone.

RAD Soldiers for Google Chrome

RAD Soldiers for Google Chrome can be downloaded from the Google Chrome store. If you are playing in several multiplayer matches at once, it loads much quicker on Google Chrome.

There are no loading time issues (other than on boot up) for RAD on Google Chrome. It is much easier to play with a mouse than poking spaces on an iPhone screen.

RAD bucks are the in-game currency. There are many ways to earn RAD bucks.

When playing in Campaign mode on Google Chrome, you may notice some locked crates falling from the sky. RAD gives you three keys for free. There are bonus items you would otherwise have to buy given in the locked crates. After you use up your three free keys, then you have to pay to buy more.

Expansion Maps

Expansion maps are offered in RAD in exchange for either RAD bucks or for payment in real currency. The downside to the free-to-play part is that the cheapest expansion map costs 45 RAD bucks. This means if you are saving RAD bucks, you better save them for an expansion map, since you can purchase recruits with coins, and coins can be won in online multiplayer.

Just by observation, I would like to see more cities and campaigns available to unlock, and some for only 20 something RAD bucks.

Overall Rating for RAD Soldiers

Overall, I give RAD a thumbs up for being an awesome free-to-play strategy video game for both iPhone and Google Chrome. What is even more awesome is that you can log in from either and your account is automatically synced. You can pick up from your iPhone if you want to play on the go.

As long as there is more unlockable content to work towards, then this video game will keep your attention.

It is very exciting to read about Civilization Online from 2K games, which is an online MMORPG version from the Sid Meier franchise. It is currently being created for the PC, running on the CryEngine 3. Company XL will launch Civilization Online in Korea.

Will Civilization Online Come to North America?

Perhaps in the future, but most likely not in 2013.

This beautiful looking game has no planned North America launch at this time. It only has a planned launch in Korea, and perhaps in other Asian countries after that.

Jake Song, CEO of XL games shares that players are units within their civilization, and take part collectively to take their civilization to a to certain goal. There will be four starting civilizations to choose from, and there will be six eras to play through, including: Ancient, Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, and Modern.

The game play is continuous in real-time until the victory condition is achieved by a civilization, which includes taking out other civilizations. Once a player gets the needed materials, he or she can build it right away, not having to wait in a turn-based system.

Civilization Online is Better Than World of Warcraft

Differing from World of Warcraft, classes will not be used. Instead, Jake Song explains that career choices are more appropriate, and career paths can be changed at any time, without penalty. All of the structures will be built by the players, as well as clothing, vehicles, and gear. Gear will not be set to "bind" on any player, allowing the free exchange between players, or the option to sell it back to the store.

Other Fresh Features in Civilization Online:

• Civilization Online will have auction houses and player-ran stores.
• Civilization Online will have resources distributed equally and randomly throughout the world.
• Resources can be traded through alliances, or taken by force through PVP conquest
• Every world in Civilization Online is considered one session and the game continues until the victory conditions have been achieved.

Youtube currently does not own the syndication rights to Sherlock (BBC), but user Jojo fever on Youtube has uploaded episode 2 from Season 1 titled: "The Blind Banker." User Jojo fever appears to be a person from the country of India, and does not own the syndication rights to Sherlock. This user appears to be violating copyright laws. Episodes like this do not stay up on Youtube for very long. They are removed when the video is reported for violating copyright laws.

Hulu only has clips related to a cartoon Sherlock Holmes and clips related to the Sherlock (BBC) movie starring Robert Downey Jr.

Of the three, Netflix is your best bet for catching up on Seasons 1 and 2 of Sherlock (BBC). Of course, this requires a paid subscription to Netflix instant streaming.

Sherlock (BBC) is a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes, based on the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman plays his sidekick, Dr. John Watson. Actor Andrew Scott plays Moriarty in the BBC series. I think Andrew Scott plays an excellent Moriarty. His character is very believable to be a sociopath.

The show was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss as they were on their train commute to work on the show, Doctor Who. (Read my recent post on Doctor Who).

In the BBC television version, each Sherlock episodes run about 1 hr. 30 min. each in length, and airs on local PBS television stations in the U.S. as a part of Masterpiece Mystery!

If you have seen Sherlock Seasons 1 and 2, then you might be wondering how Sherlock faked his own death. You can watch Sherlock: "How he faked his death" here.

Trivia fact:

If you are like me, then you check your bank account balance online regularly. You can do this with an app on a smartphone, or with a computer, depending on if your bank offers an app and online banking.

There are many different banks (just to name a few):

• What does ND transaction type mean?

But do you know what all of the transaction types are in the pending section?

Banks have many transaction types (below are just a few):

I called the bank customer service and they told me they will make a note to take a look at this, since it shouldn't credit my account twice.

Three Classes in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online

There are three classes with special abilities:

1. The Assault soldier uses devices that take time to deploy that get used until they are fully discharged or manually deactivated. Assault devices include the HEAT device which disrupts the enemy with painful microwaves and the BLITZ device which allows the soldier to charge the front lines with a bulletproof shield.
2. Recon devices recharge slowly, but can be switched on and off at will, so long as they have some stored energy to power them. Recon devices include the ORACLE system that hacks enemy intelligence to reveal battlefield positions and the CLOAK device which renders the ghost temporarily invisible to enemies.
3. The Specialist uses devices that can be charged up in order to increase their effectiveness... however, if overcharged these devices may overheat and cause injury to the user. Specialist devices include the BLACKOUT device which disrupts nearby enemy electronics and the AEGIS device with deploys a protective laser-burst plasma field.

I am excited to see what the gameplay is like in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online.

Tracking [You] in the Virtual World Just Makes Cents

Did you know that you are being watched when you play video games online?

Ok, maybe not literally as in "on video camera," but you are definitely being tracked as you move your avatar (or digital self) around in virtual worlds, and various websites place tracking cookies on your computer.  And they are watching who you interact with, and what you buy, and what you do.  That is a fact.

Do you mind if a company places a tracking cookie on your computer? I do.

A company called GameSpy Technology is paid to track your virtual behavior.  Does that name sound familiar?  It might if you have ever visited IGN.com to read about upcoming games, or to try to play one of your favorite video games online.  They have a partnership. Essentially, Gamespy.com is powered by IGN.

Within the first two weeks of release, the game Red Dead Redemption tracked 13,250,237 virtual U.S. soldiers were killed in-game.  131,904,068 total counts of in-game murder took place, and not to mention the 55,813,649 virtual wolves were killed.

Such tracking takes place in other games as well.  Mafia 2, for example, tracks how long players spend in-game staring at Playboy centerfolds.

Even the popular World of Warcraft, which has over 12 million subscribers, hires experts for their business "intellience" unit for analyzing strategies to make more money off of its subscribers.

Yes, that even includes everyone's favorite time-wasting game, FarmVille.  How long until the harvest?  Oh, just 2 more hours until the pumpkin is ripe.  I guess we'll be seeing you in 2 more hours, then.

And this is just the beginning of what is called "natural experiments" on people in virtual worlds to modify behavior.  And we used to think that experiments on humans were inhumane!  Now, it is a way of life.  Not to mention we are paying the subscription fees for researchers to see how they can better sell to us.  Win-win for them.  Sounds like a paradox if you ask me.

The most common way that websites track you is with cookies. The website server places a cookie on your computer, and this cookie acts like a real-life identification chip. When you return to a website, your browser passes the cookie back to the server, and they can track everywhere you have been (what websites you have been browsing). Tracking cookies alone are not malicious in the sense that they will harm your computer. They will not harm or damage your computer like a virus will, but they do track you online.

Search engines (i.e. Google) collect data on your browsing and internet searches. If you do not like being tracked and your browsing history data saved, then a good alternative browser is DuckDuckGo.

DuckDuckGo is a search engine that prioritizes the user by making their search data private and does not provide ads in the form of personalized search results (i.e. Google). DuckDuckGo does not profile its users and gives every user the same exact results.
