Vanderbilt Football Quarterback Diego Pavia Filed a Lawsuit Against the NCAA in Federal Court for Player Eligibility

Vanderbilt Quarterback Diego Pavia isn't happy that he has limited eligibility to play at a Division I school due to NCAA bylaws restricting junior college players. He argues that he should have two more years of eligibility in his lawsuit.

Diego Pavia Filed a Lawsuit in Federal Court Against the NCAA bylaws

According to ESPN, Diego Pavia "filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee in Nashville, requesting an injunction that would prevent the NCAA from enforcing its bylaws regarding junior college player limits and grant Pavia two more seasons of eligibility."

In the lawsuit, it argues "the rules stifle the competition in the labor market for NCAA Division I football players, harming college athletes and degrading the quality of Division I football consumed by the public."

The lawsuit states: "Because Pavia cannot relive his short college career, the harm inflicted by the JUCO Eligibility Limitations Bylaws is irreparable and ongoing, and temporary and preliminary injunctive relief is necessary." Pavia wants to "put a stop to the unjustified anticompetitive restriction on universities who seek to compete for college athletes, and to restore freedom of economic opportunity for himself and other college football players."

The NCAA's stated mission is "to promote the well-being of college athletes" and Pavia's lawsuit argues that the "harms [caused] are contrary to the Defendant's stated mission of promoting the well-being of college athletes" that are former Junior College (JUCO) football players "who are harmed by this illegal restraint, and have a small window of time to compete in Division I football." Junior College Transfers Face 'Unfair' Eligibility Restrictions at Division I Schools

Currently, junior college transfers face eligibility restrictions "that are not placed on athletes who choose to delay entry to a Division I NCAA college to attend prep school, compete professionally in another sport, or serve in the military." This is what happened to Diego Pavia, and his lawsuit fights for himself and other football players in his situation.

The NCAA bylaws start the player's eligibility clock at the time they enter a two-year school (i.e. a junior college) - even if he or she does not play, including those that redshirt and the four-year eligibility limit.

Diego Pavia Transferred from a Junior College to a Division I School

Diego Pavia played two seasons at New Mexico Military Institute, which is a two-year junior college before he transferred to New Mexico State. There he played from 2022-2023, and enrolled in Vanderbilt in June with only one year of Division I eligibility left to play college football, according to NCAA bylaws.

Vanderbilt has beat Alabama and Auburn in this year's college football season and helped revive Vanderbilt's football program.

Head Coaches and Mild Alabama Offensive Coordinator Controversy

Nick Saban coaches the Alabama Crimson Tide, and Dabo Swinney coaches the Clemson Tigers. Some controversy may be said of the Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who accepted a job as the head coach of Florida-Atlantic University, and will not be on the field for this National Championship game. His replacement is Steve Sarkisian, who will be coaching on the sidelines, and this is the first time he has called plays since 2014 and being clean from alcohol abuse. Sarkisian took a break from coaching to undergo rehab for substance/alcohol abuse. The Los Angeles times has reported many alcohol incidents during his head coaching at Washington. In comparison, when Kirby Smart was announced as Georgia's head coach, he finished out the post-season play as Alabama's defensive coordinator before assuming his new position at Georgia.

2017 College Football Playoff National Championship: Alabama vs. Clemson

Monday night's game is a rematch between two talented college football programs. As Dabo Swinney said after his win over Ohio State, Clemson has set itself up as an elite football program. And most fans of college football would agree that Alabama is already the best college football program in the nation, seeing post season play almost every year, thanks to the coaching from Nick Saban, and the great athletes that are recruited by his program.

Alabama Crimson Tide's Biggest Threat is Deshaun Watson

Alabama's biggest threat in Monday night's game is the Clemson quarterback, Deshaun Watson. Last year, he was able to score 40 in Clemson's loss to Alabama. Deshaun was able to throw for 405 yards, with only 1 interception, and he ran the ball for 73 yards.

Alabama's defensive play forces the opposing team's quarterback of playing a perfect game, and Deshaun Watson is capable of playing great under pressure.

While Jalen Hurts has been playing exceptionally well for a true freshman quarterback, Alabama fans are voicing that they want to see Steve Sarkisian run more plays that involve Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris, and Joshua Jacobs in running the ball down the field.

Sept. 26, 2015 - Before today, the Tennessee Volunteers have lost to the Florida Gators the previous 10 encounters. On Sept. 26, 2015, they almost snapped their losing streak to Florida in the Swamp. After this game, one could argue that Tennessee is at the start of a comeback as a powerhouse college football team in the SEC conference, just because of how well they did offensively. However, they were not able to hold and keep the lead at the end of the game. Tennessee loses an 11th time to Florida. The scoring recap by quarter is below.

First Quarter: Florida Gators Score First Against Tennessee; Tennessee Ties it

The Florida Gators started the football game in the first quarter when K. Taylor scored a touchdown for Florida early on at 10:23 mark on the clock.

Tennessee quarterback Jauan Jennings threw the ball for 58 yards to J. Dobbs for a Tennessee Volunteers touchdown. This drive was only 14 seconds long and the score happened at 5:07 in the first quarter. At this point, the score is tied 7 - 7.

At 11:07 in the third quarter, Aaron Medley gets another 3 pt. field goal for Tennessee. Florida finally gets another touchdown at the 5:42 point in the 3rd quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Tennessee Scores Another Touchdown; Florida gets Another Touchdown and Wins Game

At 10:19 in the 4th quarter, Tennessee's Jalen Hurd runs for 10 yards for a touchdown. The Florida Gators get another touchdown at 4:09 in the 4th quarter after Brandon Powell catches a 5 yard pass from Will Grier, keeping the game close at 27 - 21. 

In a last ditch attempt, Will Grier throws a 63 yard long pass to Antonio Callaway at 1:26 in the fourth quarter. Jorge Powell kicks a field goal, and puts Florida in the lead 28 - 27.

After this scoring play, Tennessee attempted a 55 yard field goal on Aaron Medley, as he kicks and misses the field goal. Tennessee gets a second chance at the field goal, and misses again, just barely the second time.
