Season 5 of Sons of Anarchy on the FX channel has already started with a bang. Spoilers coming.
Harry "Opie" Winston, played by Ryan Hurst has been killed off.
For those not familiar with the show, Sons of Anarchy is a drama with dark humor, that follows a motorcycle club through their up's and down's of the unorthodox lifestyle. The related acronym SAMCRO stands for "Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original Charter"
Opie was a major character in the show, and his death may have come as a shock to many of the show's followers.
Opie's Death on Sons of Anarchy
In the episode titled, "Laying Pipe," the drug kingpin Damon Pope wants have of the Sons of Anarchy's monthly earnings. In exchange Damon Pope goes easy on the Sons, but only after of the brothers in prison dies. The choices are between Jax, Tig, Opie, and Chibs.
In an effort to save the Sons motorcycle club, Jax is ready to step forward as the leader of the gang, but Opie gets in the way of his noble effort, and winds up dying at the hands of a prison gang.
Many fans may have not seen in coming for Opie on the show, as his wife had already died at the end of Season 1 of the show.
Some have said that Opie died honorably (mentioned in the fan reviews on the Fall 2012 blog). While other fans are extremely upset about Opie's death on the show.
Either way, Opie's death was symbolic that he died for something much bigger than his life alone. He died for the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle gang.
