Why Did Reid Scott Leave Law & Order? Detective Vincent Riley's Exit Explained

Law & Order is losing another detective. In July 2026, Deadline reported that Reid Scott — who has played Senior Detective Vincent Riley on NBC's long-running procedural for the past three seasons — is departing the series. Season 26 premieres Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 10pm ET on NBC, and it will mark the beginning of the end for Detective Riley.

How Reid Scott Joined Law & Order

Reid Scott joined Law & Order in its 23rd season, stepping in after Jeffrey Donovan exited the role of Detective Frank Cosgrove in late 2023 over creative differences. As Vincent Riley, a tough, no-nonsense senior detective paired with Detective Jalen Shaw, Scott quickly became a fan-favorite presence in the squad room. Now, after just three seasons, his time on the show is coming to a close.

Why Is Reid Scott Leaving Law & Order?

According to reports, the exit was Scott's own decision — even though he was believed to have one more year left on his contract. The reason comes down to a brutal cross-country commute: Scott lives in Los Angeles with his family, while Law & Order films in New York City. Playing Riley meant spending roughly nine months of every year away from home, and the actor decided it was time to stop. By all accounts, he left the show on good terms.

What Happens to Detective Vincent Riley?

Good news for fans: Scott isn't disappearing overnight. He's filming a few final episodes to properly wrap up Detective Riley's storyline before his replacement debuts, so the writers have a chance to give the character a real sendoff. The exact number of episodes and the details of Riley's final arc haven't been revealed yet.

Who Replaces Reid Scott on Law & Order?

Stepping into the 27th Precinct is James Badge Dale, who joins Law & Order in Season 26 as the new Senior Detective replacing Riley. Dale is a familiar face to TV and film fans — he's best known for roles in 24, The Departed, and Iron Man 3. In a fun bit of trivia, Dale previously appeared on Law & Order: SVU back in 2002, so this is something of a homecoming.

Law & Order Is No Stranger to Cast Turnover

Riley's exit is just the latest shake-up for television's longest-running primetime drama. Mehcad Brooks (Detective Jalen Shaw) also departed the series in July 2025. As Law & Order heads into its 26th season, the revolving door of the 27th Precinct keeps spinning — and the show's formula somehow keeps working.

So what do you hope happens to Detective Vincent Riley in his final episodes? A heroic sendoff? A quiet transfer? A shocking twist?
