From William Richard "Good morning Mr. Spann. The black bear spotted on Dunnavant Valley road and 41 was again captured last night shortly after 10:00 p.m. entering Leeds city limits. I captured him on one of my trail cameras just southwest of the quarry along Dunnavant Rd (SR 25) near Elliot Lane. After speaking with the woman who took the photo and got the security footage of the bear she gave me the exact location which was near the Dunnavant volunteer fire department, so I knew which ridge he was traveling along and set up multiple cameras.

This is the Little Oak Ridge that eventually becomes Mills Ridge in Leeds (AL). It's part of the mountain ridge that runs parallel to 119. I may have cheated a little bit and baited him to draw him in with a case of black berries, apples, and raw fish, so don't mind the bait pile.  This location is also just once in a list a few miles south of the Waffle House which is an infamous location for bear sightings in the past.

And as always, here is the photo (ssen above) from my trail camera app geo-tagged with exact GPS coordinates and the camera location on the map for authentication purposes to validate this is real. I noticed how many people questioned the validity of yesterday's photo. I believe this is the same bear from the video footage I sent you Thursday from Chelsea and Highway 51. I can't recall a black bear being this documented as it migrates northeast since I've lived here anyway. Pretty cool."

In My Opinion...

I think Jersey Mike's should provide other side options besides just chips, but I can't complain about their delicious sub sandwiches. Some people would like to eat healthier, and I think introducing other sides, like potato salad, would be popular for Jersey Mike's Subs.

I thought it was great when Jersey Mike's took the money from one day's sales and donated all of it to a local charity. That was really a class act for Jersey Mike's to do that.

I have always wanted to try the Grilled Pastrami Reuben, #20 on the hot subs menu, but I can't get myself to order anything other than the Chipotle Cheese Steak sub, because it is that good!

North Alabama residents got to experience nature over the weekend that is more typical of Gatlinburg, TN, or Asheville, NC, when a black bear was seen roaming around a neighborhood in June.

Facebook users sometimes say strange things, and this time was no different. Several users commenting on Danielle Dozier's original Facebook post think they are seeing a baby elephant. 

*For context, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide's mascot is an elephant, so there may be a joke hidden in there.

Facebook user Quoc Ha posted in the comments, "Looked like a baby elephant at first. lol" 

Facebook user Ashley Palguta added in the comments, "Quoc Ha, I thought it was an elephant. I thought it was some kind of AL joke."

It is important to remember that when you encounter a bear of any kind, to should keep calm. 

• If you have time, get all children and pets indoors quickly.
• Never turn your back on a bear and run. This can trigger a predator instinct to chase. 
• While black bears tend to be more skittish than other types of bears, a mother bear will be more aggressive when protecting her bear cubs. Always stay clear of bears and keep your distance.
• Never feed wildlife, including bears. It can cause them to get attached to humans, rather than fear them, and this will never end well for bears.

Whirlpool has agreed to pay affected consumers in a class action lawsuit settlement after certain models of their fridges sold under three different brands (Whirlpool, Maytag & KitchenAid) developed a frost build-up that interferes with cooling, resulting in costly repairs.

The U.S. Sun reported that Whirlpool has agreed to pay up to $300 USD to consumers who purchased one of their refrigerators starting in 2012. More details on the specific date range are provided below.

Whirlpool has not admitted any wrongdoing in the class action lawsuit settlement but has agreed to pay an undisclosed total sum to eligible consumers.

Class members receive up to $300 USD for repairs and 75% of the original price if the refrigerator is between 1-3 years old.

Details of the Whirlpool KitchenAid Maytag Class Action Settlement 

The class action lawsuit settlement will compensate consumers who purchased certain Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag refrigerators sold between 2012 and 2019, which were affected by a manufacturing defect that caused excessive frost to accumulate on the evaporator. The serial numbers of the defective models are provided by the manufacturer.

Consumers have been told to check whether their appliance is eligible for searching for its serial number on the settlement website. Class members can receive up to $300 for past refrigerator repairs and replacements, under the settlement terms.

$2.5 Million Hexclad Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

HexClad has agreed to pay cash to customers in a $2.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve false claims that its cookware was free from toxic chemicals, such as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

The lawsuit is: Cliburn v. One Source to Market, LLC dba Hexclad Cookware, Inc.

Allegations in the Lawsuit Against Hexclad

In the lawsuit, HexClad customers claimed in the class action lawsuit that the company's products are not as safe as they seem. According to the class action lawsuit settlement filed by the plaintiff, HexClad cookware does allegedly contain toxic chemicals, such as PFAS and PFOA, despite being advertised as being free from these toxic chemicals. 

According to the class action lawsuit, HexClad's "false and misleading representations and omissions" are material and would likely deceive reasonable consumers.

Unsurprisingly, HexClad has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve the allegations. 

The class action lawsuit settlement will pay cash to consumers who purchased one or more eligible HexClad products between Feb. 1, 2022, and March 31, 2024.

If you purchased a HexClad cookware product during this period, visit the official claim form online to join the class action lawsuit settlement. Consumers who want to be eligible to receive a cash payment must do so by November 15, 2025.

Proof of purchase is not required for consumers who submit a claim for one or two products, but consumers submitting a claim for 3 or more products must provide a receipt or proof of purchase.

The deadline for exclusions and objections is August 5, 2025.

The final approval hearing for HexClad is September 15, 2025.

Amazon is Training Robots for Home Package Delivery, Per Report

Amazon is enhancing its logistics operations by developing and testing humanoid robots for package delivery. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and potentially transform the last-mile delivery process and integrating robots into more of its operations.

Amazon is Making a Park to Train Robots for Package Delivery

Amazon has been constructing a humanoid robot park in its San Francisco, CA office. This indoor obstacle course is designed to train robots to navigate complex environments, simulating real-world delivery scenarios with the future goal of package delivery.

According to The Information, the company plans to deploy these humanoid robots from inside its fleet of Rivian electric delivery vans. The robots would exit the vans to deliver the packages directly to the customer's doorstep to streamline the delivery process. Per the New York Post, Amazon recently purchased 20,000 Rivian vans for its fleet.

Amazon has established an "agentic AI team" focused on developing flexible robot systems capable of understanding and responding to natural language commands. This effort is part of a broader strategy to replace rigid test-specific machines with more adaptable solutions. 

The company is evaluating various humanoid robots, including the digital robot from Agility Robots and a $16,000 model from China's Unittree. These tests are crucial for assessing the robotics capabilities in real-world delivery tasks.

More Robots Could Potentially Reduce the Need for Humans

While the deployment of humanoid robots could enhance efficiency, there are concerns about potential impacts on human employment. Amazon currently employs approximately 275,000 drivers in the U.S. and about 1.55 million people worldwide. The company states that the human drivers can still operate the vans without causing inefficiencies, suggesting this would be a collaborative approach between humans and robots. 

This initiative reflects Amazon's ongoing commitment to integrating advanced technology into its operations, potentially setting new standards in the logistics and package delivery industry.

Apple Agrees to Pay Settlement in U.S. District Court Case

Here's what happened:

Apple agreed to pay out a class action settlement on Dec. 31, 2024, due to a lawsuit filed by California resident Funiko Lopez, who claimed in the lawsuit that "Siri conducted unlawful and intentional interception and recording of individuals' confidential communications with their consent and subsequent unauthorized disclosure of those communications."

The court case Lopez v. Apple Inc. states:

"Apple intentionally, willfully, and knowingly violated consumers' privacy rights, including within the sanctity of consumers' own homes where they have the greatest expectation of privacy...Plaintiffs and Class Members would not have bought their Siri Devices or would have paid less for them, if they had known Apple was intercepting, recording, disclosing, and otherwise misusing their conversations without consent or authorization."

Apple agreed to the settlement on Dec. 31, 2024, but "denies all of the allegations made in the lawsuit and denies that [they] did anything improper or unlawful."

Who is Eligible to File a Claim in the Class Action Lawsuit?

Anyone in the U.S. who owned or purchased an Apple device between September 17, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and enabled Siri during that time period is eligible to file a claim before July 2, 2025.

You would receive a notice in the mail or by email with a Claimant ID Code and Confirmation Code. You would take this information from your notice and go to this page online to submit your information.

• A settlement has been reached with Apple Inc. (“Apple”) in a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of current or former owners or purchasers of a Siri-enabled iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, iMac, HomePod, iPod touch, or Apple TV (“Siri Device/Devices”) whose confidential or private communications were allegedly obtained by Apple and/or shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation.  Apple denies all of the allegations made in the lawsuit and denies that Apple did anything improper or unlawful.
• The Settlement provides for a $95 million fund for payments to Settlement Class Members who are individual current or former owners or purchasers of a Siri Device, who reside in the United States or its territories, and whose confidential communications were obtained by Apple and/or were shared with third parties as a result of an unintended Siri activation.  The Settlement Class excludes Apple; any entity in which Apple has a controlling interest; Apple’s directors, officers, and employees; Apple’s legal representatives, successors, and assigns.  Also excluded from the Settlement Class are all judicial officers assigned to this case as well as their staff and immediate families.  The Class Period is September 17, 2014 to December 31, 2024. 
• If you believe you are a Settlement Class Member, you must submit a valid Claim Form to get a payment from the Settlement. Settlement Class Members may submit claims for up to five Siri Devices on which they claim to have experienced an unintended Siri activation during a conversation intended to be confidential or private.  Settlement Class Members who submit valid claims shall receive a pro rata portion of the Net Settlement Amount for a Class Payment of up to a cap of $20 per Siri Device. The amount available to Settlement Class Members will increase or decrease pro rata depending on the total number of valid claims submitted, and Siri Devices claimed.   Depending on the total number of valid claims, this Plan of Allocation is subject to modification by agreement of the Parties without further notice to Settlement Class Members, provided any such modification is approved by the Court. The final amount will not be known until all claims are evaluated.  Please see the information in the Notice concerning payments.

New Scientist reported that China has developed a new way to extract uranium from seawater efficiently and more economically, possibly paving the way for a large-scale industrialization of uranium extraction.

China Leads the World in Nuclear Power Plant Expansion

According to New Scientist, China is leading the world in building new nuclear power plants, which will only be aided as they have developed a new method for efficient extraction of uranium from seawater. New Scientist reported that "half of the nuclear reactor projects currently under construction are in China," with their installed nuclear capacity to surpass both the US and European Union by 2030.

China has developed this as New Scientist reports that "the world's oceans hold an estimated 4.5 billion tonnes of uranium, which is more than 1000 times the amount that is available through mining."

China Develops New Method for Trapping Uranium with Electric Fields

Previous experiments have harvested uranium from seawater using artificial sponges made of a polymer material. Then there was a method that trapped uranium using an electric field.

According to New Scientist, researcher Shuangyin Wang at Hunan University along with colleagues have developed a new electrochemical method that is both cheaper and more efficient to extract uranium from seawater.

When they tested the method, they were able to extract 100% of the uranium from East China Sea and 85% of the uranium from the South China Sea. 

The Cost Savings of New Uranium Extraction Method

They did this by running 1 liter of seawater through the system using two copper electrodes - one positive and one negative, and both collect uranium. This highly efficient method allows both electrodes to gather uranium with incredible cost savings.

Previous electrochemical methods cost $360 per kilogram of uranium extracted, while this new method claims that it cost $83 per kilogram of uranium extracted.

Why Arby's is Better than its Competitors

Arby's is known in its commercials for the deep-voiced tagline, "We have the meats!" and it does have the meats.

One of Arby's greatest strengths is its diverse menu, that often includes brisket, corned beef Reubens, and deli-style turkey and ham sandwiches. They often provide better cuts of meat than their competitors, but that doesn't mean you won't get some sandwiches that have fat in them. Not every sandwich is perfect.

That is why some fans are not happy with his ending in the Season 2 episode 2.

Why does Joel die in The Last of Us, Season 2, episode 2?

This episode had a group of outsiders known as "the fireflies" watching the Jackson Hole community, plotting a way to find Joel. The leader of this group is Abby, who has a reason why she wants to find Joel -- he murdered her father, and she wants revenge. 

Joel and Dina are on horseback on patrol, while Ellie and Jesse are inside a former 7 Eleven gas station that contains dried-up marijuana plants.

Joel helps save Abby as she is being chased down by infected, and she brings Joel back to her camp, where he is tortured. Abby reveals to Joel that the fireflies have a code not to kill those who are not able to defend themselves, but she reveals to Joel that he killed her father in cold blood. Her rage takes over, and she shoots Joel in the leg. One of the fireflies applies a tourniquet to Joe's leg, and Abby continues to torture Joel.

Joel does not attempt to fight back as he has nowhere to go, surrounded by the fireflies.

Ellie watches the final moments when Abby stabs Joel with a golf club, and he dies. Ellie is devastated and promises to kill her.

Afterwards, Jesse, Dina, and Ellie ride back on horseback to their community, with the body of Joel being dragged behind them.

While they were away, Joel's brother Tommy was in charge of protecting the town. He had to go one-on-one with a large bloater (seen below) and his flamethrower pack almost overheated.

As this episode ends, it is clear that the character dynamic is changing with the departure of Joel. That is not to say that there won't be flashbacks of Joel, but it will certainly be different as Joel was a father-type of figure for Ellie as she is going through her own rebellious phase.

An Alabama Woman Noticed a Teddy Bear in a Garbage Pile, so she Snagged it for her Dog. Inside a Secret Pouch, She Found Human Ashes

A woman from Lauderdale County was driving through Muscle Shoals with her daughter and happened to see a stuffed teddy bear in a garbage pile. She thought it might make a good chew toy for her dog, so she stopped to grab it from the trash. When she opens a secret pouch in the teddy bear, she finds what she believes are human ashes along with a note.

WHNT News 19 reported that Vicki Wise and her daughter were just driving through a random Muscle Shoals neighborhood when her daughter saw a teddy bear in someone's garbage pile. They decided to stop and grab it as a chew toy for their dog.

Vicki inspected the teddy bear closer and saw the embroidered words "Forever in My Heart" on the bear's left foot. She then found a secret pouch inside the teddy bear, which held a little heart-shaped box with the words "Forever in My Heart" on the front and "Barry Freed" on the back. A note attached to the back of the box read: "Barry Freed passed away on May 20, 2020."

Many people have wondered if Barry Freed was a human baby or even a pet.

WHNT News 19 reported that Vicki Wise tried to do an internet search on the name Barry Freed, she did not find any information about Barry Freed or the family.

She said:

"I don't know who he is. All I know is his name and the date he passed away," Wise said. "I don't know where he is from. I don't know anything about him, but I do know that he had to be loved, and I know that the person he belongs to is missing him." -Vicki Wise

Goldin Auctions Sold 'Cheetozard' for Nearly $88K

An auction house in New Jersey auctioned off a Flamin' Hot Cheeto that resembles the Pokémon character Charizard. The final price of the auction reached $87,840 after fees on March 2, 2025.

According to ABC Action News, Goldin Auctions house in New Jersey discovered and preserved a Flamin' Hot Cheeto that resembled a Charizard in a clear box along with a Pokémon card. The cheeto was dubbed the "Cheetozard," and reached a final price of $87,840 after 60 bids. 

The Cheetozard was first discovered by 1st & Goal Collectibles between 2018 and 2022, and received a lot of attention on social media starting in 2024.

The auction ended on Sunday, March 2, 2025 after the Cheetozard was seen at the 2025 February Pop Culture Elite Auction, starting at only $250. The winning bid was actually $72,000 before Goldin Auctions' fees were added, bringing the final price to $87,840.00 USD.

Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville Send Letter to Kash Patel to Request More FBI Employees at Redstone Arsenal

Two U.S. Senators representing Alabama sent a letter to newly appointed FBI Director Kash Patel to convince him to send 1,000 more FBI employees to its Redstone Arsenal campus after Kash Patel already given orders for 500 FBI employees to transfer from Washington to Huntsville. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville are behind the new initiative to ultimately bring 4,000 more FBI jobs to the Huntsville area.

According to AL.com, shortly after being appointed to the new FBI Director, Kash Patel "reportedly ordered the transfer of 500 workers from Washington, D.C. to Redstone Arsenal." These orders also included moving 1,000 FBI employees from the D.C. headquarters "out into the field."

However, U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville want more FBI employees moved to the Redstone Arsenal.

In a letter to Kash Patel, Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville made a case urging Kash Patel to send even more FBI employees to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.

Excerpts from the letter can be read below:

“Alabama is proud to host Redstone Arsenal, a hub for the FBI’s cutting-edge technology and advanced training,” the senators stated. “As national security threats grow more complex, the operations at FBI-Redstone Arsenal must expand to meet these challenges.”

“Given the strategic investments at Redstone Arsenal and its alignment with your mission to prioritize the safety and security of the American people, we urge you to assign an additional 1,000 employees to FBI-Redstone as a first step.”

Senator Britt invited Director Patel to visit the FBI’s Huntsville facilities during his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing. Patel affirmed his commitment to staffing the Redstone Arsenal campus, stating, “Senator, you have that commitment.” He also acknowledged the campus’s critical role in strengthening the FBI’s nationwide infrastructure.

The expansion of the FBI’s Redstone Arsenal campus is part of a larger effort to enhance national security operations, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, intelligence, and advanced training. With ongoing federal investment, the Huntsville FBI campus is poised to play a pivotal role in the FBI’s evolving mission.

3 More Businesses Permanently Close at Bridge Street Town Centre in Huntsville, AL in January 2025

Three more businesses are permanently closing their doors for good at the Bridge Street Town Centre outdoor shopping mall in Huntsville, AL. Read the details on the business closings.

First, Pieology Pizza left around November 2024. 

An employee from Bridge Street Town Centre posted the following on Reddit.com/r/HuntsvilleAlabama:

"I work at Bridge Street and I was there the day before they closed. The guy working there said they were bought by a different company and the new owners wanted to keep the stores mostly in Florida. Not sure how true that is but just what the guy said."

Then PBR Lockhart Smokehouse permanently closed its doors at Bridge Street at the end of 2024.

FOX54 reported that the cowboy-themed restaurant closed after a 'Countdown to 2025' celebration. The restaurant was a unique joint venture partnership between PBR Cowboy Bar and Lockhart Smokehouse and opened in October 2022. They described themselves as "an electric combination of PBR Cowboy Bar's 'cowboy cool' with Lockhart's iconic Texas barbeque."

3 Stores Closing in Bridge Street Town Centre in January 2025

FOX54 reported on 2 January 2025 that Chico's, Soma, and White House Black Market will all close their Bridge Street Town Centre Huntsville, AL stores permanently on 26 January 2025.

All of these stores are owned by Chico's FAS/Sycamore Partners, which is based out of Florida.

FOX54 reported that this news was shocking to employees, who reportedly learned of the store closures "just days after Christmas."

One employee said, "Our general manager was informed by our District Manager," which came after management told employees that "their locations would not be affected."

An employee told FOX54, "We have ladies who have been here eight years, 11 years, and then my management, my manager now has been here eight years. And there's no plan B for some people."

It was clear that employees "were kept in the dark about the store closings" until after the holiday shopping season.
